● February marks Black History Month. After the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor in 2020, the time is now to learn black history, read books written by BIPOC, and support black-owned businesses. ● Jeff Bezos announced he will step down as Amazon’s CEO and instead take on the role of executive chairman. Andy Jassy will step up to fill the CEO position. Amazon started in 1995, is now a $1.7 trillion company. (Business Insider)
● Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., was chosen as transportation secretary. Buttigieg ran as a Democratic presidential candidate, but will now work alongside President Joe Biden and take on projects involving an $87 billion budget. He will become the first openly gay cabinet member. (Politico)
● Vice President Kamala Harris cast a vote which broke a tie in the Senate, regarding the COVID-19 relief bill. While the COVID-19 relief bill is yet to be passed, this was a big step forward. It allowed for a “budget reconciliation,” a term that gives lawmakers the ability to bypass the 60-vote threshold. (Fox News)
● Experts favored the Kansas City Chiefs for Super Bowl predictions. Experts also favored Patrick Mahomes to win Super Bowl MVP with Tom Brady coming in second. (ESPN)
● Super Bowl commercial bidding launched at $5.6 million for 30-seconds of screen-time. The Weeknd is set to perform the half-time show. (Sporting News)
● SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, launched a starship that exploded. This was the second prototype to do this. The first occurred in December. (The New York Times)
● Coronavirus cases dropped and people getting vaccinated are on the rise. (U.S. News)
