● FDA Authorize Johnson & Johnson Vaccine ○ The United States FDA declared the J&J vaccine to be safe and effective in adults 18 and older. FDA commissioner, Janet Woodcock said, “The authorization of this vaccine expands availability of vaccines.” Scientists and medical experts are still testing to see if these vaccines would be safe or effective for children. Dr. Fauci predicts that they would be able to administer to teens in the upcoming fall, and after clinical trials, in younger children in 2022. (ABC News) ● Myanmar Security Forces Kill at Least 18 Protesters ○ It was the bloodiest and most violent demonstration since the February 1st military coup. They used lethal force on these protesters for the first time in the city of Yangon. According to the United Nations’ human rights offices, at least 18 died and 30 were wounded across the country. This however is not stopping the movement and has made protesters more angry than scared. (The Washington Post) ● Hate Crimes Against AAPI are Rising ○ Since the initial spread of the coronavirus, it has been apparent that there has been misplaced blame on Asians, especially the Chinese population in the United States. Many social media platforms have posted real-time visual evidence of people assaulting Asian-Americans or vandalizing their businesses. Filipinos make up 4% of registered nurses in the United States, and many have stated that since the pandemic, they have noticed a large shift and racism and intolerance in the workplace by their own patients. (USA Today) ● What to Know About the 2021 Golden Globes ○ Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will be hosting for the fourth time, however, they will be hosting through virtual mediums. Many of the nominees will be participating in a remote forum as well. There has been a lot of criticism following the Oscars and Golden Globes for a lack of diversity and inclusivity when it comes to nominees as well as those in the actual committees. Tune in on Roku, Hulu with Live TV, YouTube TV, or on NBC. (USA Today) ● Will Grey’s Anatomy Continue? ○ Ellen Pompeo has been the lead since the start of it all in 2005. In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, she stated that she didn’t know if they were going to choose to continue the series or not. Pompeo said, “I just want to make sure we do this character and this show and the fans – I want to make sure we do it right.” (People)
