Derek Chauvin, the former police officer, and George Floyd’s murderer was found guilty on three charges: second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. (NBC) While there was a moment of relief and justice regarding Chauvin’s case, news later broke out about the death of 16-year-old Ma-Khia Bryant by a police officer in Columbus. While Chauvin’s verdict felt like a few steps forward, Bryant’s death reminded the nation of how police brutality is still a major issue. (NPR)
4/20 brought attention to the ongoing issue of the criminalization of cannabis and the impact it has on people of color. While still illegal federally, 17 states now allow for the recreational use of cannabis. However, BIPOC is more likely to get arrested for cannabis possession than white people—264% more likely as the ice cream brand Ben and Jerry’s pointed out. (Vox, Ben and Jerrys)
April 22nd celebrated Earth Day. Experts estimate that the Earth’s average global temperature increases by 0.2 degrees Celsius every decade. We have already seen the effects of climate change with wildfires in Oregon. Experts predict that at this rate, the Earth’s temperature will reach a threshold by 2040 that will lead to even more extreme disasters like droughts, floods, food shortages, heat waves, and unsupported ecosystems for both insects, plants, and aquatic life. On a lighter note, the University of Oregon announced plans for in-person spring commencement activities for the class of 2021 including a Grad Parade and Stage Procession. Vaccines are free and available at Autzen! Students are encouraged to walk, ride a bike, or drive through to get vaccinated.
