College is, to say the least, intimidating. From the onlooker’s point of view, there is no idea what to expect, and how to plan for the countless challenges ahead. No matter how many “Day In The Life: College Edition” vlogs we watch, nothing can quite prepare you for the real thing. Having just nearly finished my first term at the University of Oregon, I’ve already come across some tips and tricks to survive the coming years.
Take a deep breath: We’re all struggling! I know few people who are not bogged down by their many assignments and extracurriculars, so it’s important to first note that you won’t be alone. Take a moment to be introspective, and understand that if you find yourself behind at any point, all will be okay.
Planner, planner, planner: Listen, it may not be for everyone. Those people out there who can think up every to-do in their mind and crush that list, I’m obscenely jealous of. I myself need to write it down. Paper and pencil, iPad and Apple pencil, keyboard and Google calendar, whatever works for your mind! Note what needs to be done, big or small, and later delight in the satisfaction of crossing it off the list.
Reach out to professors/tutors: Seriously, it’s in their job description. I am always so frightened to be doing something wrong or to look silly, but these people are here to teach us and help us learn. If you are struggling in any way, don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Dedicate a space for schoolwork: I cannot tell you how poor of a choice I made in the beginning: doing schoolwork in bed. Not only does this throw off your Circadian Rhythm, it also just makes it very difficult to focus on your work. There are so many distractions in your own personal space. Whether it’s a coffee shop, a University
building, or a desk four feet from your bed, make sure your study space isn’t where you sleep. 5. Make time for you: College is very consuming. There are times when you can be completely overcome with every little thing you have to get done. In my opinion, the only way to combat this is to devote time to things that have absolutely nothing to do with school. Your brain and body need to turn off every so often, it needs dopamine and social interaction and exercise and things that homework can’t provide. Your work can only be as good as your well-being. Only eight weeks in and I feel I’ve learned so much, but it’s just going to continue! I hope you can integrate one of these things into your routine, and that they can help you in your scholastic journey.
