University of Oregon Autumn Essentials

UO WICI

By Kelly Newton

As we are in the midst of the peak fall season here in Eugene, I am inspired to share some fall activities that I use to make the most of this cozy season. From neighborhood walks to coffee shops, there are so many ways to enhance those autumnal vibes and create the perfect fall feel.

I want to start with some Eugene-specific activities that have really helped me get into the autumn spirit. One of my favorite ways to appreciate this time of year is by just looking around at nature. In Eugene there is some great fall foliage, especially in late October and early November, so here are some great places to walk and see all those autumn colors.

A classic walk near campus is across the river to Alton Baker Park using the Autzen Canal Bridge. With a variety of footpaths, there are so many different routes you can take to explore the nature around Eugene. I walked over here almost everyday during my freshman year at UO and it was a great way to clear my mind and reconnect with nature during the busy school season. It’s also a great place to go with a walking buddy to catch up and chat.

Another great place to walk is the Fairmount Neighborhood on the east side of campus, as well as the neighborhoods just south of campus. As an architecture connoisseur, I love looking at all the old houses in these neighborhoods and appreciating their character, which is always enhanced by the fall season and its bright colors. For a slightly longer walk, you can go up the hill to reach Hendricks Park, which has even more nature and peaceful places to think. Fall is one of the best opportunities to take the time and explore Eugene, so if you’re thinking of going on more walks, now’s the time to do it.

If you’re feeling like venturing out a little further, a classic fall activity is apple picking. I had the chance to go to Detering Orchards, just outside of Coburg, earlier this month. They have a great variety of farmers market products, hot and flavorful apple cider, pumpkins, and more. In their apple fields, you can stroll past the trees and pick your own apples. I loved my experience there and I would highly recommend it to anyone that wants to have the perfect fall day, especially if you want some good photo opportunities.

If you are looking for a cozy place to sip on some coffee or study this fall, a great place to do that is Meraki Coffee Co. The inside of the shop is very comfortable with many tables and couches, perfect for both getting work done and relaxing. They also have a wall of windows looking out onto the fall foliage. One of my personal favorites on their menu is the Salted Caramel Latte. I’ve been there many times and I have never regretted a visit. I think coffee shops in the autumn are a perfect way to embrace the coziness of the season and romanticize a study session.

While in the midst of a hectic school term this fall, remember to take breaks and appreciate the beauty of autumn. Be sure to take advantage of all Eugene has to offer, especially during this cozy time of year!
