As someone who has been a fan of Olivia Rodrigo since the High School Musical: the Musical: the Series, Iwasveryexcitedforthereleaseof“Driver’sLicense”onJanuary7th,2021.The song “Driver’s License” is a pop ballad about a heartbroken girl passing by a former lover’s house after getting her driver’s license. On the day it released, it was number one trending on Twitter and Tik Tok. Within the first two days, it reached number 3 on top charts on Itunes and Spotify, following Taylor Swift. A day later from the release date, it ranked number one on the charts with 17 million streams. This song touched so many people, even people that have never experienced heartbreak, including myself. The lyrics that resonate the most are in the chorus when it says, “ I guess you didn’t mean what you wrote in the song about me. “You said forever and now I drive alone past your street.” The authenticity of her lyrics is what drives this emotion similar to Taylor Swift and Lorde. She also became the first Asian American woman in music history to be #1 on Apple Music Charts and U.S Itunes. As an Asian American woman, I was very proud to see how this song was not only impacting others’ emotions but also representing the diversity of the music industry. I highly recommend streaming “Driver’s License” if you haven’t listened to it. Just mentally prepare for it and don’t forget to grab a box of tissues for this heartbreaking single!
