In honor of Women’s History Month, here is a collection of some great tips that may be helpful no matter where you are in your academic or professional journey. These figures have learned the ins and outs of being a woman in the workforce, realized what was essential for them, and shared these insights that may just be applicable for your next internship or job. 1. D anielle Weisberg and Carly Zakin, former producers for NBC News, founders of theSkimm: "People say, 'Be open to everything.' We follow a different trend: Say no—a lot!". "It's how you focus and reach important milestones when you don't have a lot of resources." (Self) 2. H illary Clinton, former U.S. Senator and Secretary of State: “Take criticism seriously, but not personally. If there is truth or merit in the criticism, try to learn from it. Otherwise, let it roll right off you.” (thejobnetwork.com) 3.S ofiaAmoruso, founderofNastyGalandauthorof#GirlBoss: “The playing field is not level, but if you show up at the table like a peer—and this is only in my experience—people will treat you like one. And if they don't, then you prove that you know what you're talking about.” (Self) 4.K athleenHanna, musicianandactivist: “Find something you really care about and mix that with something you love doing.” (thejobnetwork.com) 5. Ginni Rometty, chairman, president, and CEO of IBM: “Be prepared to spot growth opportunities when they present themselves—because they are the key learning opportunities. You’ll know because they make you uncomfortable, and your initial impulse may be that you’re not ready. But remember: Growth and comfort never co-exist.” (Camille Styles) 6. Mary Kinney, Executive Vice President and COO of Ginnie Mae: "The wisest advice I ever got was to build my career on what I want, not what others want for me. This means acknowledging that while you may not be the best at something, you can still reach your goals if you possess the passion and drive.” (Shape) Although it is easy to compare our paths to one another or feel like a career goal is out of reach, there are so many support systems out there, paths that you can take, and leaders who have paved the way to gain inspiration.
