Finding your Specialty

By Courtney Yamada

It can be scary to think about your future after post-grad and whether you are choosing the right field of study. I think that it’s important to trust our gut and try new things even if it scares us. Here are a few tips I’ve learned along my journey so far:

  1. It’s okay to switch I originally started as a PR major and my curiosity is what drove me to explore advertising courses. If you are truly curious about looking into a different major or specialty, I highly suggest doing it. You never know if you like it unless you try.

  2. Take classes that you are interested in As simple as that sounds, take classes that you have an interest or passion for. I think that it truly is trial and error by seeing whether you like the work that you are doing in the class. Whether you end up liking or not liking the class, you’re one step closer to finding out about what you want to pursue in your career.

  3. Research job positions Looking for jobs that interest you can help narrow down what specializations pique your interest. Simply looking on LinkedIn, Indeed, or other online job search websites can help you have an understanding of what jobs you could possibly have after college.

  4. Find Opportunities Find ways to get involved with your major such as clubs, associations, or internships. This can be helpful at gaining experience in roles that you are interested in working in and will allow you to see whether you like it or not. Gaining any experience will also allow you to find internships and even more experience in specialization roles that interest you.

  5. Talk to a professional Reach out to an advisor, an alumni, or anyone you know in the field. This can allow you to get an idea of what kind of work you will be doing in the future by talking to people who have experience. Talking to an advisor especially will help you set up a plan for courses to take.

  6. Trust the process Although it can be hard not knowing what you want to do in the future, trust the unknown. Trust that you don’t know, and let that curiosity drive you to figure it and allow you to step out of your comfort zone.
