Five Things in Florence, Oregon to add to Your Bucket List

By Katerina Triantafillou

One of the many perks of going to school in Eugene includes the quick hour-long drive to the Oregon Coast. Florence, Oregon, located 62 miles away, is a favorite of many and offers so much to do. It is a perfect place to take a quick day trip or spend the weekend with friends to enjoy nature and the small town. Below you will find my top four things to do in this quaint coastal town.

Visit the Sea Lion Cave

One of the fun attractions in Florence is the historic Sea Lion Cave. It is considered one of the largest sea caves in the United States. Sea lions and their cubs take shelter in the now privately owned wildlife preserve. Travelers to the Oregon Coast can walk down into the cave to hear and see the funny sea lions.

Get Active with a Beach Walk or Hike

Lace-up your sneakers and head out into nature with you and your friends. Choose between taking a long walk along the coast or exploring the well-known hikes around Florence. Some easy recommendations are Sweet Creek Falls and Hobbit Trail, plus plenty of other options you can find online. Whether you choose to explore the beach or the woods, you will undoubtedly enjoy the serene nature around you.

Witness and Tour the Heceta Head Lighthouse

Located 1 mile from the Sea Lion Cave is the beautiful sight of Heceta Head Lighthouse. This attraction is one of the best sights along the Oregon Coast and has been standing there since 1894. Try to time your visit to make it to the twice-a-day free tours. First, park at Cape Cove, and from there, it’s a short trek to the lighthouse.

Wander Through Old Town Florence

The old town is filled with charm and little shops, art galleries, and restaurants to explore as you enjoy the scenery. The popular strip is located along the Siuslaw River, which creates an ideal atmosphere for the walks you will share with friends. In addition, you will get to watch seals swimming and kayakers move throughout the water.

As you can probably tell, there are many things to enjoy in Florence, Oregon. There are multiple activities to plan throughout a one-day to a multi-day trip with friends. Whether you are a foodie, shopper, or nature lover, there is plenty for everyone. So go explore what the Oregon Coast has to offer. You will not regret it!
