The return to campus after a long stretch of break can be challenging. With Saturdays spent at Autzen Stadium in the rearview until Spring Term, a swift shift to winter weather hovering over Eugene, and the sky paralleling the appearance of midnight just shy of 5:00 pm, it can be easy to get bogged down by Seasonal Affective Disorder (or, appropriately abbreviated to SAD). Here are WICI’s three tips to stay motivated amidst the struggles of winter term.

1. Get Active!
All movement is good movement, especially during the winter months. Whether it’s a leisurely stroll through the University Street neighborhoods, a Group X workout class with friends, or a hike at Spencer’s Butte, try to implement exercise into your routine, especially outside if the weather permits. The burst of endorphins will help your body release stress, sleep better, and feel more energized when it is arguably much harder to do so.
2. Treat the weekdays like the weekend!
You don’t have to wait for Saturday to allow yourself to have fun! Stop by the EMU Starbucks for a coffee, take a scenic cruise with friends, or grab dinner with your S.O. Committing to adding a portion of your day that is reserved for something fun is crucial, especially when coming down from the excitement and activities of fall term and settling into the winter months.
3. Create (and stick) to a routine that makes you feel YOU!
The success of our days is often determined by what we do in the Before and in the After. Make sure you reserve time to eat proper meals, get plenty of sleep, and stay hydrated. Sticking to a consistent routine will create structure and help you feel more in control. For a natural serotonin boost, reach for omega-3 wherever you can, such as salmon, flax seeds, walnuts, or fish oil supplements. For a more regulated circadian rhythm, you can even try out a light therapy lamp that mimics sunlight – it might be worth a try.
The sun will be back before we know it! While winter term may be challenging, there is still fun over the next few months. Touch base with friends and family, lace up your running shoes if they call, and make sure you make time for yourself through the stressors of college life. You got this!
XOXO,
WICI
