Home has always been a safe place. A constant that will always be there. Growing up as a military brat, I never lived in one place for too long. This may be a predicament for a person who loves routine and consistency. But as life was always moving forward, my constant has and always will be my mom. She is the anchor to our family and my best friend I can say anything to. We recently moved back to our first home, Oregon. It is the state where I go to college, my parents will retire, and where I hope to find my first job after undergrad. Throughout college, I have made it a routine to come home at least a few weekends throughout the term. This weekend is Mother’s Day making going home for the weekend that much more special.
This weekend is dedicated to Mom, consisting of simple pleasures. Friday, to peruse every store in the mall until our feet hurt, as we finished off with our favorite meal, “linner”(an early dinner starting at 3 pm). Saturday started with a family breakfast in the garden and a stroll through the Beaverton farmer’s market. The rest of the weekend was spent watching post-season softball and Queen Charlotte. There is something about the home where my slumber is more profound and the days I feel more alert. I spend less time on my phone and focus on being with my loved ones. With the senior year approaching, life will become more hectic as adult responsibilities are approaching.
Everyone in these transition years needs to take time with those they love and cherish, whether with mom, dad, brother, sister, friends, or pet. Life can be fun and unpredictable, but having a safe space to recharge and refresh to tackle the next hurdle has always benefited me. I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother’s Day and a weekend full of love and laughter.
