As the pandemic is allowing us to change and adapt to the new norms. Here are a few tips I would suggest with starting a remote internship that I’ve learned so far.
Stay Focused For me, it’s honestly hard sometimes to stay on track of my assignment. Make sure to put your phone aside because it can be tempting to get a hold of it when things get stressful. It’s okay to take little breaks in between, but make sure to concentrate on your tasks because you are expected to get your tasks done within a certain window of time.
Be accountable Because your internship is online, you have to be accountable for the mistakes that you make and also know when it’s time to log off. It can be easy to lose track of time so make sure that you are logging your hours and also communicating to your boss if you are having issues.
Remember to give yourself breaks You can get so invested in focusing and getting tasks done, but make sure to also take care of yourself. Take 10-minute breaks after sitting for an hour to get up and stretch or grab a snack or hydrate. It’s important to re-energize in between and it helps you stretch out your muscles that may be stiff from sitting for a while. Your mental and physical health is important too.
Ask for feedback This is one of the most important lessons that I’ve learned from colleagues or my peers. It may be intimidating to ask, but it’s better to know what you could improve upon. This will help you learn from your mistakes and also continue to do the things that you’re doing right.
Practice over-communicating Since there are limitations to being in an office and learning to communicate with your colleagues, it’s hard to gain experience with communicating. Learn to reach out to your colleagues not only if you need their help, but also to stay connected with them. By this, find time to meet up with them via Zoom or email them to gain mentorship from them.
Make the best of it
Although it can suck that it’s online, appreciate the lessons and experiences that you are gaining from your internship. You are still learning skills that will benefit you in the future and you are learning to adapt to this new norm.
